Employee Spotlight – Bob Kickner

We’d like to take a moment and recognize the following employee for their years of service and dedication to Green River. Please take a moment to learn more about them, in their own words.

What do you love about working at Green River?
The opportunity to share my passion for learning, physical activity, competition, and service on a daily basis.

What does working in higher education mean to you?
Higher Education is about sacrifice, growth, and personal improvement.  Higher education is not a right or a requirement to living a good life.  Those that take the step to invest in themselves through the sacrifice of time and resources to learn how to communicate, think critically, and solve problems are advancing our communities one person at a time.

Where is one spot on campus you find relaxing?
The gymnasium.

Of all employee benefits, which one do you appreciate most?

In your role, what accomplishment are you most proud of?
Serving over 800 students over the past ten years as an academic advisor and as a shaper of extracurricular activities and athletic opportunities.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
I appreciate the skills needed for music, art and drama as much as I do athletics.  I have a deep respect for the work necessary to be skilled enough to perform anything at a high level.

If you could swap places with any other position on campus just for one day, what position would that be?
Landscaper.  You control the outcome, receive immediate feedback, and work with nature (who doesn’t talk back).

What on campus makes you smile the most?
Watching the new student life building going up and knowing how big of an impact it will make to the campus.

What classes on campus have you taken or would you like to take in the future?
The Economics of Sport, Sport Psychology 202, Intro to Kinesiology and Lab, Care and Prevention of Athletic Related Injuries would all be great classes to take

What advice would you give to a brand new employee?
Don’t take your work home with you, find a positive in each day, and give yourself three years to decide if you really enjoy your work.

Who is one person at Green River you’d like to thank for contributing to your success?
Bart Dowd for giving me the keys to the kingdom.
