New Employee Spotlight – Donald Kumpula

We’d like to take a moment and recognize our newest employees to Green River. Please take a moment to learn more about them, in their own words.
Kumpala, Donald

Please tell everyone your new title and a little bit about your professional background.

I’m Don Kumpula and I’m the new Lead Accountant in the Business Office. Prior to coming to Green River, I was a Fiscal Specialist at the University of Washington in the Department of Family Medicine. I have worked in State Government for a number of years, including auditing positions in the State Auditor’s Office and Employment Security. I was also a Kindergarten and 1st grade teacher!

What drew you to apply to Green River?
I love working in an educational environment in support of students and the community. Specifically, I was drawn to Green River by the good things I have heard about the college.

On the car ride to work, what do you listen to?
Well, I have to get used to commuting alone again. I used to take the bus and I would spend the morning chatting with my “bus” friends. In my car, I listen to pop radio stations; I love to hear those traffic reports.

What was the very first job you ever had?
I worked as a dishwasher in Rogers-Orton Dining Hall at Washington State University.

What about your new position is most exciting for you?
I love learning, so it is exciting to learn new systems and processes. I also look forward to getting to know my coworkers.

What is one thing you’d love to accomplish in your first year at Green River?
My short-term goal is to remember all of the names! I hope to become a valuable part of my office and the Green River community as a whole.

What three accomplishments are you most proud of in your life?
I’m proud that I had the courage to get my Master’s in Teaching, it has made me a better person. Because of this I’m more confident and motivated.

If your coworkers were to give you an office nickname, what would that be? Why?
They are already talking about my nickname! There are too many Dons/Dawns in the Business Office. I think I would have to choose DK, because the alternatives are not very appealing (Donald, Donk, Don Juan…).

For Green River’s annual talent show (this doesn’t actually exist), what hidden talent would you showcase for everyone?
I pretty much lack talent. However, I can milk a cow!

If G.R.E.E.N. where an acronym for something, what would each letter stand for?
